A newly-released letter from to Virginia Department of Corrections Director Chadwick Dotson details the history and ongoing harassment and unconstitutional treatment of Shaka A. Shakur. The letter, authored by Jenipher R. Jones Esq., Co-Chair of the National Lawyers Guild Prison Abolition Committee and Jihad Abdulmumit, Chairperson of the National Jericho Movement, contains the subject line:
RE: Urgent Constitutional Violations and Retaliation Against Shaka Shakur, VDOC $1996207 – Eight Amendment Excessive Force and Denial of Access to Legal Materials
The damning letter, which you can read in its entirety here, calls for Shaka’s immediate medical treatment, return of all property, an investigation of violations of the U.S. Constitution, a policy review, and implementation of safeguards to ensure all inmates are able to access or control their legal materials, and disciplinary action taken against all officials, including C.O Brinegar, who particpated in these unlawful and racist practices.
