Along with the upcoming release of Shaka A. Shakur’s first book, Manifestations of Thought, the Shaka Shakur Freedom Campaign (SSFC) is excited to announce we recently completed a new documentary about the political prisoner and New Afrikan revolutionary, organizer, theorist, educator, movement builder, and human rights advocate.
In honor of the 84th anniversary of the birth of George Jackson, the Indiana chapter of the SSFC is hosting an exclusive preview of the new documentary, “Soul in Exile,” followed by a discussion with the directors and special guests:
- Akili Shakur, Shaka Shakur Freedom Campaign & wife of Shaka A. Shakur
- Maurice Robinson, New Afrikan Freedom Campaign & SLANG
- Nairobi X, Hear Her Voice
From the Documentary Blurb
Why is it that Shaka A. Shakur is still imprisoned, given that he has already served the entirety of the sentence for his 2002 conviction? Why is he held in Virginia – hundreds of miles away from his family – even though he was not convicted of a federal crime? “Soul in Exile” explores these questions and recounts the story of this Political Prisoner and New Afrikan revolutionary organizer, author, and theorist and, by doing so, answers these questions and more.
Told through the words of Shaka, his wife, friends, and supporters, this documentary is about more than one political prisoner and those directly impacted by his unjust incarceration; it is a snapshot of the mass incarceration system, the evolution of the Black/New Afrikan nation and resistance, and most of all, it is a call to do everything we can to return this grandfather, community leader, and human rights advocate back home where he belongs.
